If you’ve heard that “everything will be tokenized — money, stocks, your house,” it’s not hype. Asset tokenization is one of the fastest-moving shifts in finance, and by 2026 it has moved from buzzword to live, regulated infrastructure.

Here’s what it is, what’s actually happening, and what it means for entrepreneurs, investors, and small businesses.

What is tokenization?

Tokenization means turning a real asset — a dollar, a stock, a Treasury bond, even rental real estate — into a digital token on a blockchain ledger.

Economists at the International Monetary Fund say this matters because it introduces three genuinely new features to money and finance:

  • Programmability. Smart contracts execute payments and collateral calls automatically, without a middleman.

  • Shared ledgers. One synchronized record replaces the patchwork of institutions each keeping their own books.

  • Atomic settlement. The asset and the payment change hands at the same instant, in near-real time, instead of waiting days.

The IMF calls the overall effect “a structural reallocation of trust”: risk moves from institutions to the underlying infrastructure itself.imf

Where the money is going

The numbers are striking. Tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) reached roughly $33.7 billion in on-chain value by May 2026, after growing 256% in fifteen months — from $5.4 billion at the start of 2025 to over $19 billion by early 2026. Growth accelerated in a single quarter, with the market up about 30% in Q1 2026.finextra+2

What’s being tokenized:

  • U.S. Treasuries — the dominant category at roughly two-thirds of the market; BlackRock’s BUIDL fund alone holds about $2.4 billion.finextra

  • Stocks — tokenized equities crossed $1 billion with more than 185,000 holders in March 2026.finextra

  • Stablecoins — dollars on blockchain, now a market above $319 billion; Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC lead it.finextra

  • Private credit and real estate — the fastest-growing slices, one of them reaching $1 billion in just over six months.finextra

The biggest players are not crypto startups. The DTCC, which underpins U.S. securities settlement, won regulatory clearance to tokenize custodied assets and planned commercial launch in late 2026; the NYSE and Nasdaq both secured approvals in 2026 to offer tokenized, round-the-clock tradin
